I f you have been following me for some time now, you know that I am a staunch believer in the holistic approach to health. This is the most effective “compromise-free” way of ensuring that your health stays optimum. And, at the same time guaranteeing that there are no adverse effects to other aspects of your health and life.
With your mind, body and spirit in complete and harmonious balance, it is easy for you to work at full capacity – overcoming any and all obstacles in your path.
There are several ways in which you can find and establish this balance. Any combination of the following works – through caring relationships, regular exercise, spiritual pursuits, fulfilling and productive work, inspiration in nature, leisure, entertainment and relaxation, and nourishing foods.
In this blog post, I want to focus on the nourishing foods and discuss the 5 main food types that bring you greater balance. This will help you look at the foods that you eat in a different light.
With the demands of a hectic life – work and personal – it is easy to choose convenience over quality.
Fortunately, this blog post has been written with the idea of making choosing the right foods easy for you. With this information, you are equipped to make the best-possible decision food-wise.
- Foods that sustain you
We need energy and sustenance from the meals we eat. But sometimes, we need a little burst of energy before that big day at work. A little pick-me-up before a big presentation. Something that is more than a sugar fix.
Foods that are rich in fats, complex carbohydrates, proteins and fibre are great for this purpose. For example, nut butters such as peanut and almond butter, smashed avocado with homemade toast, organic ice creams with real fruit bits, quinoa and amaranth added to salads, desiccated coconut, fruit, nut and chocolate bars, and cacao nibs.
- Foods that nourish you
We also need nourishment from our foods. The citrus fruits, cruciferous vegetables, collard greens and bean and lentil sprouts are an example of foods in this category. They are laden with essential nutrients such as vitamins and minerals.
The nourishment that these foods provide goes beyond the body’s immediate needs – for energy and vitality – and into what your body needs for continued living. They keep you feeling healthy and fit, nourishing you and fortifying you from the inside.
- Foods that relax you
Above and beyond the first two categories of food, we also have the foods in this third category that relax and rejuvenate you. They help you reduce your stress levels and help you feel grounded. Imagine having some of these foods after an especially stressful meeting at your workplace?!
Fragrant herbs such as dill and coriander, wholesome teas with ginger, lavender and cinnamon, detox foods such as cucumber and celery and artisan foods that remind you of home such as fresh baked breads and grilled salmon can help you feel relaxed when you are disorientated and stressed.
- Foods for a hectic work week
While you need a combination of foods from all the categories above to truly survive, this group offers foods that you must consider while planning for an especially tense and strenuous workweek. A demanding workweek can often mean cutting corners, taking the shortcut and having those quick-fix meals. Not anymore!
Here are the foods that are easy to add to your meals and I totally recommend them: walnuts in bread, salad or simply sprinkled on your meals, probiotic yogurt or milk to give your gut that extra boost of strength and immunity, vegetables sauteed with a generous portion of garlic, and green smoothies with a bit of banana or papaya.
- Balance Oil
And finally, supplement your meals with Balance Oil. Why?
The foods we eat are becoming more and more nutrient deficient. This is a fact. What this means is that the nourishment that an apple provided, say 10 years ago, is not the same as what it provides now. Just like the apple, foods from all other categories too have undergone change. So, while we may be consuming good food and lots of it, we may not be taking in sufficient nourishment!
Added to this fact is that – internally, within the body, there is a growing disparity in the Omega-3:6 ratio. The Omega-6s are known to increase inflammation levels while the Omega-3s decrease them.
The human body can’t produce Omega-3s – these are referred to as “essential fats” and you have to eat omega-3 rich foods in order to get them. So, Balance Oil.
BalanceOil is a premium blend containing natural wild fish oil (or, marine algae for vegetarians/vegans), high in Omega-3 (EPA + DHA), olive polyphenols and Vitamin D3 from organic Spanish olives. It helps protect cells from oxidative stress, adjusts the body’s Omega-6:3 balance, fights chronic inflammation, and supports normal brain function, heart function and immune system revival.
